A tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station has claimed the lives of at least 15 people, including three children, with more than 10 others injured. The incident occurred due to an unexpected surge of passengers, leading to overcrowding and chaos at the station.
According to eyewitnesses, the station became overcrowded as passengers rushed to board their trains. Platform congestion and panic led to the deadly stampede. The Chief Casualty Medical Officer at LNJP Hospital confirmed the number of casualties.
Four special trains have already been arranged to accommodate stranded passengers, and authorities are planning additional special trains to ease congestion. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has ordered a high-level investigation into the incident.
Many passengers reported that the crowd swelled uncontrollably, and lack of crowd management worsened the situation. A survivor said, "People were panicking and pushing each other. Some fell, and others were crushed under the weight of the crowd."
Police and railway officials are monitoring the situation. Medical teams have been deployed to assist the injured, and the government has expressed condolences to the victims' families.
India’s railway stations frequently experience overcrowding, especially during festivals and peak travel times. Better crowd control measures, advanced monitoring, and improved emergency response systems are needed to prevent such tragedies in the future.
This heartbreaking incident highlights the urgent need for better crowd management at railway stations. While authorities have responded swiftly, preventive measures must be put in place to ensure passenger safety.
